Globular clusters as tracers of the dark matter content of dwarfs in galaxy clusters

چکیده
ABSTRACT Globular clusters (GCs) are often used to estimate the dark matter content of galaxies, especially dwarf where other kinematic tracers lacking. These estimates typically assume spherical symmetry and dynamical equilibrium, assumptions that may not hold for sparse GC population dwarfs in galaxy clusters. We use a catalogue GCs tagged on Illustris simulation study accuracy GC-based mass estimates. focus galaxies stellar range 108–1011.8 M? identified nine simulated Virgo-like Our results indicate are, average, accurate systems with numbers NGC ? 10 uncertainty individual line-of-sight velocities is smaller than inferred velocity dispersion, ?GC. Dark Matter in Globular Clusters
We rst review reasons why dark matter is an interesting issue in connection with star clusters. Next we consider to what extent the presence of dark matter is consistent with their dynamics and structure. We review various model-dependent and model-independent methods which have been applied to two well studied clusters, NGC 6397 and 47 Tuc. We suggest that about half of the mass in each object...
متن کاملStar clusters as tracers of galaxy evolution
Star clusters represent the most common ‘mode’ of star formation. They are found in all types of environments, cascading down from galaxy groups and merging pairs through starbursts to normal galaxies and dwarves and even isolated regions in extragalactic space. As they maintain a link to the overall star formation in a system, they can be used as tracers of the star formation history of enviro...

We study the evolution of the stellar and dark matter components in a galaxy cluster of 1015 M from z = 3 to the present epoch using the high-resolution collisionless simulations of Ruszkowski & Springel. At z = 3 the dominant progenitor haloes were populated with spherical model galaxies with and without accounting for adiabatic contraction. We apply a weighting scheme which allows us to chang...
متن کاملGlobular Clusters as Fossils of Galaxy Formation
The globular clusters in the halos of large galaxies like our own are almost certainly fossil remnants of the early star-forming subsystems from which these galaxies were built. The ages of the halo clusters in our Galaxy indicate a prolonged period of galaxy building lasting at least several Gyr, and their masses indicate that they were formed in very massive star-forming complexes in protogal...
متن کاملGlobular Clusters in nearby Galaxy Clusters
The discovery of a large population of intra-cluster star clusters in the central region of the Hydra I and Centaurus galaxy clusters is presented. Based on deep VLT photometry (V, I), many star clusters have been identified not only around the early-type galaxies, but also in the intra-cluster field, as far as 250 kpc from the galaxy centres. These intra-cluster globulars are predominantly blu...
